MEPS [Minimum Energy Performance Standards]
 
The impact of wasted energy consumption by using old inefficient refrigeration systems that would not pass MEPS today is tremendous.
 
We at BevWizz Australia are aware of this fact and as a result, specify equipment which complies with the MEPS Regulations.
 
MEPS programs are made mandatory in Australia by the state government legislation and regulations which give force to the relevant Australian Standards.   Regulations specify the general requirements for MEPS for appliances.  Technical requirements for MEPS are set out in the relevant appliance standard, which is referenced in state regulations.   State based legislation is necessary because the Australian constitution gives Australian States clear responsibility for resource management issues, including energy.

Drought Hits Breweries
 
It was petrol, then bananas—now the price of beer is on the rise and its worsening inflation that pushes up interest rates.  Drought conditions have hit the production of malting barley, a key ingredient in the fermentation process.  The barley crop, due for harvest within weeks, is expected to fall by more than 40 per cent this year as dry conditions cramp yields across South-Eastern Australia. Brewers expect prices for barley, which provides the sugars that give beer its alcohol, will increase sharply as supply falls, leading to possible retail price hikes down the line.
 
 
 
 
 
Chefs Do it Tough on a Tight Budget
 
Canberra chef's Graham Green, Janet Jeffs and Kris Kerehona faced one of the biggest challenges recently.  They each had to prepare tasty, nutritious meals using the same budget as an aged pensioner ($60 a week), single mother with three children ($140) and full-time student ($35).
 
The exercise, part of Anti-Poverty Week, was held to highlight the difficulties faced by people living on welfare. Green, the executive chef of Green Herring Restaurant at Nicholls, said finding affordable food and planning meals, even for an experienced chef, was "very tough".  He avoided supermarkets in a bid to find cheaper, fresh food, but said it was impossible to provide all the nutrition the young family needed.
 
 

 
 
Cooking up Business
 
The idea of going to a restaurant dates to China's Sung Dynasty, between 960-1279.  By 1926, in Los Angeles, someone came up with the first restaurant gimmick to attract diners when the famous Brown Derby, the restaurant shaped like a hat, opened its doors.
 
 While gimmicks may attract a few curious food fans, it is the sense that there is much more on offer that sees diners coming back.  When Black Out opened its doors on St Kilda Rd, Melbourne in 2004, the novelty of dining in the darkness, which is a move supposed to heighten the senses of taste and smell, was what drew people to the experience.  The question is how many people kept going back.
 
Jamie Oliver's latest restaurant 'Fifteen' is the new buzz in Melbourne.  People who have been there say the food is simple, but great, which is obviously an attraction. The concept  of a restaurant being  part of a reality TV programis helping young Melbournians stay in a job and helps the reservation line run hot.
 

Making Tipping Mandatory 
Tipping has been a way of life in America for years.  For many workers, it's the difference between an average income and a healthy one.
 
Australians and Europeans are not hot on the custom, as staff will tell you.  A lot of time is spent telling people in America that it's not that Australians are mean; it's just that it's a custom they are not used to.  Now, there is a move in the US to make tipping mandatory - giving customers no option. Currently many restaurants automatically add 15 per cent to the bill, as is the case with room service in some hotels.  On top of that, it is customary to add another 10 per cent for good service.
 
The reason?  Wages are as low as $7.50 an hour for some restaurant staff.  Tips make all the difference.  However, in many cases it is expected and not earned.
